The tiny UK airport named 'best in the world' as Heathrow and Gatwick snubbed

A small UK airport has triumphed against the odds to be named as the best in the world - and it's nowhere near London. Newcastle Airport in the UK has been named 'best in the world' at an awards ceremony in Istanbul, Turkey, named as the best in the "under 5 million passengers per year" category at the Routes World Conference. The airport was the only UK airport to receive a nomination across any categories. It was praised for its airline engagement, operational delivery, and comprehensive marketing and travel trade exposure. Despite not yet a major European transport hub, Newcastle beat out dozens of competitors from across the world. It recently added four new airlines, six more based aircraft, thirty new routes, and twelve new destinations.

A tiny UK airport has been named as "best in the world" at an awards ceremony - while larger airports like Heathrow and Gatwick were snubbed. Newcastle Airport triumphed at this year's Routes World Conference in Istanbul, Turkey. The small international airport was the only UK airport to receive a nomination across any of the categories. Newcastle was named as the best in the world in the "under 5 million passengers per year" category. It comes as the airport has recently added four new airlines, six more based aircraft, thirty new routes, and twelve fresh destinations.

While not yet a major European transport hub, Newcastle beat out dozens of competitors from across the world. He said: “This achievement is testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees across the airport. "And demonstrates our commitment to providing the best customer service to our passengers and business partners. All of which allow us to win prestigious awards such as this.”

The airport was acclaimed for its airline engagement, operational delivery and for providing comprehensive marketing and travel trade exposure. Newcastle also opened thirty new routes in the last year, with passengers now able to jet off to Egypt, UAE, Norway, and Cape Verde. Director of aviation development Leon McQuaid said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious Routes World award. "A big thank you to all of our airline partners for nominating us, which is great recognition for all of our teams’ dedication and hard work to deliver for our airlines.”
